The latest community survey conducted by The Greater Washington Community Foundation reveals the challenges that many neighbors face in meeting basic needs, as well as significant disparities by race/ethnicity, age, and location.

Across the DMV, nearly half of respondents are struggling or suffering, with nearly one in five residents reporting lacking money for health care or food in the past year and one in ten reporting there were times when they lacked money for adequate shelter.

Among Black and Hispanic residents, more than one-third did not have enough money for food at some point in the past year and more than 20% were unable to provide adequate housing. Among White residents, these percentages fell to five and two percent.

Residents of DC and Prince George’s County were three times as likely as Northern Virginia residents to report lacking money for food and three to four times as likely to have struggled to provide shelter.
