Many Hands invites you to join us for an important program on DC’s Maternal Mortality Crisis with featured speakers Ebony Marcelle, director of midwifery at Community of Hope (a 2008 Many Hands grantee) and Andria Cornell, associate director of women’s and infant health at the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs. Award-winning documentary producer and former Many Hands Board member Jill Rosenbaum Meyer will moderate the discussion
Washington, DC has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the United States, which has the worst maternal health outcomes in the developed world. Currently in the greater Washington area, the maternal death rate stands at 36 deaths per 100,000 live births. The rate for DC is more than 50 percent higher than the national average and even higher for women of color. The recent closures of several maternity wards in DC hospitals have only added to the urgency of this crisis.
Our program will highlight the causes of pregnancy-related deaths and the factors contributing to the challenges facing many women in our community. We will look for a roadmap forward to improve outcomes for all DC women and their newborns, especially women and families facing the greatest socioeconomic need.
