Event announcement

Please join Many Hands on Giving Tuesday (December 1) for a special conversation with Tamara Lucas Copeland and Kathy Kretman on the role that philanthropy can play in advancing racial equity. Long-time nonprofit and philanthropic leaders in the greater Washington region, Kathy and Tamara co-taught a course at Georgetown University titled “Philanthropy, Power & Impact” that explored the complex relationship between funders and nonprofits. In this wide-ranging discussion, moderated by Katy Moore, they will address the difference between charitable giving and working for racial justice, explore how funders and nonprofits are working to promote racial equity, and highlight the challenges and opportunities facing grantmakers as they reexamine their work through a racial equity lens.

As Many Hands prepares to embark on another year of grantmaking, we hope you’ll join us for this important conversation!

Tamara Lucas Copeland served for more than 12 years as president of the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers, where she conceptualized and led “Putting Racism on the Table,” a multi-year initiative to help local funders understand how structural racism and implicit bias contribute to the social ills they are trying to address. Her book Daughters of the Dream was published in 2018. Kathy Kretman leads the Center for Public & Nonprofit Leadership at Georgetown University, where she serves as Research Professor in the McCourt School of Public Policy and holds the Waldemar A. Nielsen Chair in Philanthropy. As director of Georgetown’s internationally recognized nonprofit executive certificate program, she has helped train more than 1,500 nonprofit leaders. Katy Moore is senior director at the Orr Group and a member of the Many Hands Board.
