Many Hands members are invited and encouraged to volunteer for Board service, and expressions of interest are welcomed on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Many Hands is governed by a volunteer, working board with fiduciary, legal, and practical duties. The Board is responsible for organizational oversight and planning, and for carrying out the day-to-day activities necessary to achieve our mission and goals. Directors are elected to a three-year term (starting in July) and may be re-elected to a second term. Click here for a detailed description of Board responsibilities and other considerations.

In addition to identifying a slate of capable and diverse candidates who will fulfill the core responsibilities of Board membership, the Nominating Committee must consider the experiences, skills, and professional expertise needed by the Board currently and in the future.

The Board currently needs members with interest and expertise in the following areas:

  • Communications
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Financial Management
  • Fundraising
  • Information Technology

Service on the 15-member Many Hands Board is a powerful and rewarding opportunity to collaborate closely with a group of committed members with diverse experiences and perspectives. The contribution of time and expertise, in addition to financial contributions, is critical to the sustainability and continued success of Many Hands.

Many Hands values and is grateful for every member who offers to serve. If a member is not elected to the Board to fill a current vacancy, it is primarily a reflection of the complex range of experience and attributes needed at the time of the election. Nominees that are not elected may be considered in the future.

If you have questions about the nominating process or you would like to talk with a current or past Board member before deciding if Board service is right for you, please email Susan Sarver at nominating@manyhandsdc.org. Please encourage fellow members to complete the interest form or email the Nominating Committee with recommendations for leadership positions. We will consider all expressions of interest, and proactively reach out to recommended candidates.

Throughout the year, we are also seeking members who want to work on a committee, such as Membership or Communications. Committee service is an excellent way to engage with other members and to see how Many Hands volunteer leadership works—especially if you’re interested in Board service in the future.
